UK ambassador urges transparent evidence for Romania's election cancellation

Giles Portman, the United Kingdom's ambassador to Bucharest, told Digi24 that the outcome of Romania's presidential election was a startling surprise for everyone, with early exit polls matching expectations before a rapid reversal. He commended Romanian officials for probing the unexpected TikTok campaign and for their overall response, yet emphasized that citizens deserve a transparent account of why the vote was annulled, supported by concrete evidence.

When asked about Russian involvement, Portman said he does not believe Romanian society favors Moscow and urged the country's intelligence services and government to conduct a thorough analysis. He also discussed the growing role of drones in modern conflicts, citing Ukraine's experience as beneficial for European security, and mentioned RAF aerial police missions in Romania. Finally, Portman highlighted the strategic importance of the Black Sea, referencing economic projects like Neptun Deep and the expansion of the Port of Constanța, as well as security challenges such as naval mines and drone threats, noting recent deliveries of mine-hunters from the British Royal Navy to the Romanian Navy.
