House panel says Vice President Duterte and husband deliberately hid billions in assets

The House prosecution panel alleges Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband Manases Carpio intentionally concealed tens of billions of pesos in bank deposits and insurance investments.

During a press briefing, the House prosecution panel asserted that Vice President Sara Duterte and her spouse Manases Carpio deliberately concealed substantial assets, violating constitutional duties. Adviser Ace Barbers emphasized that the omissions were not accidental but a calculated attempt to hide material information. Over 15 witnesses from banks and insurance firms testified that the pair held between P59 million and P71 million in yearly bank balances, alongside large insurance investments, from 2022 through 2025.

When compared with the “others” line items on their SALNs, the undisclosed amounts total tens of billions of pesos each year. Prosecutor Benjamin Tolosa Jr. stressed the repeated nature of the concealment across multiple years. The panel urged that the magnitude of the undeclared assets be considered by the Senate judges.

Why it matters

The allegations suggest possible constitutional violations and corruption by a senior elected official, raising concerns over transparency and public trust.
