Hungary expects over 40 foreign delegations for 1956 uprising anniversary, but only a few heads of state confirmed

Budapest prepared for more than 40 foreign delegations at the 70th anniversary of the 1956 uprising, yet only a handful of leaders have confirmed attendance.

The Hungarian government promoted a large international presence for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 uprising, citing more than forty foreign delegations. However, verification with embassies and ministries showed that the actual list of attending heads of state is limited. Serbia's Đuro Macut and Moldova's Maia Sandu are the only confirmed presidents or prime ministers.

High-level EU officials, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, are also on the schedule. The French embassy in Budapest stated that President Emmanuel Macron will not take part, contradicting earlier expectations. Overall, the event will feature a notable but smaller roster of foreign leaders than initially projected.

Why it matters

It shows the gap between diplomatic expectations and actual attendance at a key historical commemoration.
