Indonesia to launch Giant Sea Wall project with mangrove pilot this October

Indonesia's government will break ground on the Giant Sea Wall in October, starting with a mangrove-based nature solution before moving to conventional structures in 2027.

Indonesia plans to commence construction of its Giant Sea Wall this October, beginning with a mangrove-focused ceremony, according to Nazib Faizal, the ministry's Deputy for Basic Infrastructure Coordination. He indicated that the mangrove pilot is a preliminary step and that traditional grey-infrastructure work will start in 2027. President Prabowo Subianto has pledged to see the 575-kilometre coastal barrier along the Pantura region completed over roughly 20 years, protecting residential zones, industrial estates, ports, airports and farmland from tidal flooding, land subsidence and rising seas.

Technological support comes from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The North Java Coast Management Authority, led by Didit Herdiawan Ashaf, is aligning preparations with local governments from Banten to East Java. The integrated system will combine offshore and onshore dikes with nature-based solutions to safeguard strategic infrastructure along Java's northern shoreline.

Why it matters

The project aims to protect millions of Indonesians and key economic assets from climate-driven coastal hazards.
