Johor education officials launch counselling and security measures after student murder

The Johor Education Department will provide psychological counselling to the family, teachers and friends of 16-year-old Irene Sofiya, who was killed at a Yong Peng secondary school, and plans to improve school security.

A 16-year-old student, Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, was found dead after being attacked at a secondary school in Yong Peng, prompting the Johor Education Department to arrange psychological support for her family, teachers and peers. Dr Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali, chair of the Johor Education and Information Committee, explained that counselling will be offered and monitored on the first, third and seventh days after the incident.

He visited the victim’s family in Kampung Parit Selamat and confirmed that school sessions will continue as normal. The department plans to introduce closed-circuit television cameras throughout the district and is working with the Education Ministry, police and parents to strengthen school security. A 16-year-old male classmate has been arrested and remanded for six days under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Authorities will keep the public updated on the situation.
