Jokowi meets Prabowo as Constitutional Court rules on Gibran’s education case

Former President Joko Widodo visited President Prabowo Subianto’s South Jakarta residence on Oct 6, the same night the Constitutional Court dismissed a petition questioning Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s school-attendance records.

On the evening of Oct 6, former President Joko Widodo traveled to President Prabowo Subianto’s Kebayoran Baru residence in South Jakarta, a meeting. Security forces and presidential guards surrounded the area, and journalists were kept at least 100 metres away, preventing any visual confirmation of the participants. The agenda of the meeting was not disclosed, and both sources close to Jokowi declined to comment.

At the same time, the Constitutional Court convened to rule on a challenge to Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s educational credentials, a petition brought by several groups including the Independent Election Monitoring Committee. Justice Liliek P. Adi announced that the petitioners lacked legal standing under Article 74, paragraph 1, letter b, and therefore the case was dismissed. The court noted that Gibran’s submitted attendance certificate proved school attendance but not graduation, yet it was deemed sufficient for candidacy.

The ruling was issued at 8:58 p.m., shortly before the session adjourned. The case is recorded as No. 01/PHPU.PRES-XXIV/2026.

Why it matters

The encounter and court decision underscore ongoing political friction over the vice president’s eligibility, influencing Indonesia’s power dynamics.
