Magyar Péter warns Orbán Viktor's DPK remarks may breach Hungary's criminal code

Minister Magyar Péter said Orbán Viktor's recent DPK speech about armed resistance could violate Article 254 of Hungary's Criminal Code.

Magyar Péter used his Facebook account to denounce Orbán Viktor's comments made during a fee-based DPK event, labeling them as encouragement of armed insurrection and violent alteration of the constitutional order. Citing Article 254 of the Hungarian Criminal Code, Péter asserted that such speech meets the criteria for a serious state-against crime, punishable by up to life imprisonment. He referenced the article's first paragraph, which penalises direct actions to change the constitutional order by force, and the second paragraph, which covers preparatory acts with a lesser term.

Additionally, he highlighted the third paragraph, which exempts individuals who voluntarily abandon the planned crime. The minister framed the remarks as among the gravest offenses against the state.

Why it matters

The claim raises questions about free speech limits for political leaders in Hungary.
