Micron to dramatically expand chip assembly and testing capacity in India next year

Speaking at the inaugural SEMICON India 2026, Micron chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra outlined a major expansion of the company's chip assembly and testing operations in India. The Sanand plant in Gujarat, which started commercial production this year, already produces enough memory to satisfy the entire Indian laptop market and ships finished DRAM and NAND products globally under a "Made in India" label. Micron plans to increase output from tens of millions of chips this year to hundreds of billions next year, effectively multiplying its capacity.

Design work is carried out in the company's Bangalore and Hyderabad centers, which have contributed over 3,700 patents, inventions and disclosures to Micron’s worldwide portfolio. The expansion follows a seven-year presence in the country, employing more than 7,000 staff directly and supporting tens of thousands of jobs across the supply chain. Mehrotra linked the move to rising AI-driven demand for faster, denser memory.
