Pas and Bersatu poised for open clash in upcoming Melaka state election

With Perikatan Nasional deregistered, analysts say the former allies Pas and Bersatu may confront each other in the Melaka polls.

The dissolution of Perikatan Nasional has cleared the way for a potential showdown between Pas and Bersatu in the forthcoming Melaka state election. Political scientists point out that the two parties, once restrained by coalition ties, have already clashed in Johor and Negri Sembilan and now face a more open rivalry. Pas has publicly ruled out any partnership with Bersatu, leaving the latter vulnerable because its party logo is unfamiliar to many voters.

Analysts suggest Pas will require coalition partners to stay competitive and prevent a fragmented Malay electorate, while smaller groups like Wawasan, Pejuang or Gerakan might thrive by contesting under the Pas banner. The Melaka assembly was dissolved on September 23, with voting scheduled for November 14.

Why it matters

The split could reshape Malay-vote dynamics and affect the balance of power in Malaysia’s upcoming state election.
