Paya Terubong landslide area to be closely monitored after recent collapse

Mayor A Rajendran said the slope at the Paya Terubong site shows no further movement but warned that continued rain could trigger another slide.

A recent landslide in Paya Terubong claimed the life of 73-year-old Dr Wong Kar Lin, whose house collapsed after heavy rain. Mayor A Rajendran reported that the slope has not shown additional instability since the rain stopped, but cautioned that ongoing wet weather may increase the risk of another slide. The municipal council (MBCC) halted construction on a condominium and nearby roads, directing the developer to carry out safety-enhancing measures, including rerouting a water pipe to improve drainage.

Council engineers, together with consultants, examined the slope’s condition amid the rain. Rajendran said the occupational safety and health department and the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia will investigate the incident for at least three months. He also noted that the council has set up a WhatsApp group for residents to forward complaints to the developer, and that warning letters were sent in September to strengthen safety before the monsoon season.

Why it matters

Ongoing monitoring is crucial to prevent further landslides that could endanger lives in the rain-prone area.
