PH Presidential Council reviews house arrest procedures, not election plans

In Melaka, the Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council convened to study the legal framework and operational guidelines needed for house arrest, a novel concept in Malaysia. Amanah president Mohamad Sabu explained that the council would defer the drafting of standard operating procedures to the Attorney-General and other competent bodies. This agenda was set after the Pardons Board granted former prime minister Najib Razak house arrest for the balance of his sentence, contingent on payment of a RM50 million fine from his SRC International conviction.

Najib must meet all stipulated conditions to remain under house arrest until August 2028. The council explicitly did not discuss the upcoming general election, noting that the decision rests with the prime minister, though Sabu expressed a hope for it to be held toward the end of next year. The meeting also marked the launch of the Melaka Amanah election machinery in Duyong.
