PNL Vice President Sets Conditions for Backing the Niculescu Government

PNL vice-president Alexandru Muraru said the party will support the Niculescu cabinet only if it pursues fiscal discipline, reduces the budget deficit and adopts realistic 2027 budget estimates.

Alexandru Muraru, vice-president of the National Liberal Party (PNL), posted on Facebook that his party will only endorse the Niculescu government after it is formed if it implements policies aimed at shrinking the budget deficit, upholding fiscal discipline and safeguarding ongoing investments. He added that PNL is prepared to vote for the 2027 state budget provided it rests on realistic revenue projections and a credible expenditure plan, warning that overly optimistic forecasts would worsen economic problems.

While affirming PNL’s role as an opposition party, Muraru said the bloc will assess every government action through the lens of national interest. He also responded to public calls for the liberals to abstain from supporting the cabinet, reminding that democratic rules require the party that toppled the previous Bolojan government to take responsibility for forming a new one. Muraru cited the PSD’s role in removing the former cabinet and urged accountability from all parties involved.

Why it matters

The stance determines whether the liberal party will help shape Romania's fiscal policy and budget for the next years.
