President Nicușor Dan weighs three paths to end Romania's government deadlock

President Nicușor Dan will finish today’s consultations with parties and announce his choice for prime minister, considering three possible solutions.

President Nicușor Dan is set to conclude a day of party consultations by naming the next prime minister, with three scenarios on the table. One proposal calls for an independent premier who would assemble a cabinet that includes party ministers, requiring only PNL support while PSD and UDMR would occupy ministerial posts. A second scenario would see PSD head Sorin Grindeanu tasked with forming a government, either by striking a deal with PNL or by partnering with AUR if talks with PNL fail.

The third alternative envisions a rotating executive, beginning with PSD and later handing power to a right-leaning coalition, a plan previously floated by PNL and USR leaders. Liberal factions remain divided, with some urging a full-power government to address budget revisions, while others reject any coalition that includes PSD and call for early elections. President Dan has dismissed the idea of snap elections, fearing it could extend the political crisis.

Why it matters

The decision will determine Romania's next government and affect budget and policy direction.
