Prime Minister Lecornu calls Thursday meeting on police role after urban unrest

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has summoned political parties to Matignon on Thursday to discuss police conduct following recent urban riots and looting.

Following a wave of unprecedented urban violence and looting, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu invited all political parties to a Thursday session at Matignon, accompanied by the interior minister. He criticised the contradictory narratives about police, noting that some claim the force kills or wounds, while recent events have raised questions about police inaction. Lecornu suggested that one outlet policing doctrine might need revision and said this topic will be a key part of the discussion.

The meeting will also examine how to protect campaign rallies during the presidential election. RN president Jordan Bardella announced that neither he nor Marine Le Pen would join the talks, and Gabriel Attal, leader of Renaissance, said he did not understand the prime minister’s proposal, adding that it does not appear to address today’s pressing issues.

Why it matters

The meeting could shape France's policing policy and election security amid rising civil unrest.
