PSD pushes for ministerial seats in upcoming hybrid Romanian cabinet

PSD leaders have urged Sorin Grindeanu to secure major ministries in a new hybrid government, combining party members, trusted allies of President Nicușor Dan and technocrats chosen by Prime Minister Luca Niculescu.

Political insiders report that the majority of PSD leadership have told Sorin Grindeanu the party should enter the government and claim significant ministries. A central leadership gathering with large-city mayors and county council presidents is set to gauge party sentiment, though the outcome appears predetermined. The envisioned executive will be a hybrid, featuring PSD ministers, individuals trusted by President Nicușor Dan and technocrats appointed by Prime Minister Luca Niculescu.

Initially, Grindeanu hoped to rebuild a coalition with PNL and UDMR, but Ilie Bolojan opposes this. PNL is ready to back the cabinet vote yet intends to shift to opposition later, while USR will abstain, leaving UDMR without ministerial posts but retaining prefects and state secretaries. The president seeks close cooperation with the Defence and Foreign Affairs ministries, expecting their heads to come from his circle.

Why it matters

The move could reshape Romania's governing coalition and influence key policy ministries.
