PSD to vote on joining Luca Niculescu's cabinet amid coalition refusals

PSD leaders will meet on Wednesday to decide whether to enter Luca Niculescu's government, despite opposition from party president Sorin Grindeanu.

According to insiders, the Social Democratic Party will convene its National Political Council on Wednesday to vote on participation in the cabinet headed by Luca Niculescu. Sorin Grindeanu, the party's president, has voiced opposition to a solo PSD government, saying it would jeopardize the party's electoral standing. This internal debate comes after PNL chief Ilie Bolojan rejected any coalition with PSD and UDMR, whose leader Kelemen Hunor also signaled a refusal to join a PSD-led coalition.

Should PSD opt out, Prime Minister-designate Luca Niculescu faces two paths: resigning his mandate in the style of Eugen Tomac, or presenting a technocratic cabinet and courting parliamentary backing. Meanwhile, PNL announced it is prepared to support a government even if it does not hold a formal seat in the cabinet.

Why it matters

The decision will shape Romania's next government and affect the balance of power among its main parties.
