PSD seeks stable coalition with PNL and UDMR, rejects minority government option

The PSD permanent bureau met to decide its backing of premier-designate Luca Niculescu, favoring a stable coalition with PNL and UDMR and dismissing a PSD-only minority cabinet.

The Permanent National Bureau of the Social Democratic Party convened at its Kiseleff headquarters to chart support for premier-designate Luca Niculescu. PSD leaders affirmed their goal of rebuilding a stable parliamentary majority alongside the National Liberal Party and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians, explicitly rejecting a minority government led solely by PSD. The National Liberal Party, represented by Ilie Bolojan, reiterated that it will not join the executive but remains open to granting an investiture vote, citing Romania’s circumstances.

Sorin Grindeanu, PSD president, argued that liberal participation is essential for the country and rebuked Bolojan’s handling of economic issues. He stressed that PNL’s involvement would serve national interests rather than a partisan favor. Negotiations continue as Niculescu seeks the votes needed to form the new cabinet.

Why it matters

The outcome will shape Romania's governing coalition and affect policy direction.
