Rahul Gandhi leads opposition march to Supreme Court demanding election chief's resignation

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA bloc will march to the Supreme Court at 4 p.m. local time to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi announced that the INDIA bloc will converge on the Supreme Court at 4 p.m. local time to press for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing alleged voter-deletion irregularities. The opposition had sought a meeting with Chief Justice Surya Kant, which was refused on the grounds that the issue is sub judice. In the preceding weekend, Delhi police deployed thousands of security personnel, shut down internet near Jantar Mantar, and detained hundreds of protesters, journalists and lawyers as they attempted to gather, citing a ban on unauthorized gatherings.

Jantar Mantar was subsequently removed from the list of designated protest sites. The Cockroach Janta Party has pledged its backing for the Supreme Court march, while the Congress Party continues to push for accountability within the election commission.

Why it matters

The protest could intensify pressure on India's election chief and influence public confidence in the electoral system.
