NOAA announced that a super El Niño, now exceeding a 3 °C ocean temperature anomaly, has set a 170-year record and will likely intensify through November and December. The warm Pacific waters are expected to alter U.S. winter storm tracks, delivering atmospheric rivers and heavy precipitation to Southern California and the Gulf Coast. This raises the risk of rain, flooding and lightning that could affect the February 14, 2027 Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium and the February 9 Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans, where many events are outdoors.

In the Northeast, the pattern typically brings milder, rain-dominant weather, potentially dampening the December 2 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting and New Year’s Eve celebrations in New York City. Meteorologists also monitor a Kelvin wave that could raise sea levels along the West Coast, increasing coastal flood threats. Authorities advise event organizers and attendees to follow local forecasts as dates approach, noting that forecasts become most reliable two to three weeks before an event.
