Tamil Nadu expands maternity leave to a full year for third child
The Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government announced that female state employees will receive 365 days of maternity leave for a third child, matching the benefit for the first two children.
Currently, women government workers with fewer than two surviving children are entitled to one year of leave. The new policy extends the same 365-day period to those expecting a third child. This change aligns the third-child provision with the existing rules for the first two children. The announcement was made by the chief minister’s administration in New Delhi.
Why it matters
It standardizes maternity benefits for all children, supporting gender equity and work-life balance for state employees.
