Telenor network outage cripples trains, emergency calls and alarm services nationwide
A major fault in Telenor's mobile network halted train traffic, blocked emergency calls and disrupted personal safety alarms across Norway.
On Thursday afternoon a widespread failure in Telenor's mobile network stopped trains throughout the country and blocked access to emergency services, including police and ambulance dispatchers. Individuals could not place personal calls, and users of safety alarms experienced a loss of connectivity. A nurse at an acute medical centre said they could not receive calls on the emergency network for an extended period, and Oslo police reported receiving multiple silent calls.
Arvid Vågen Bakken, chief executive of Careium Norge, highlighted the danger to elderly and ill users who rely on alarm systems, noting that some customers could not speak with nurses during the outage. Telenor's information chief Vetle Andersen said the company is treating the incident seriously and is investigating the cause while remaining on standby. The national communications regulator Nkom has launched a supervisory review to determine the cause and prevent future incidents.
Why it matters
The outage shows how dependent critical services are on a single telecom provider, exposing risks for public safety.
