UDMR says it will stay out of next cabinet but may back its investiture
UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor announced the party will not join the upcoming government, though it could vote to approve the cabinet if parliamentary support is needed.
UDMR is holding off on any formal stance regarding the formation of the next Romanian government until President Nicușor Dan announces the premier nominee. Party head Kelemen Hunor stressed that UDMR will almost certainly not take a ministerial seat, regardless of who is proposed. However, he left open the possibility of voting in favor of the cabinet’s investiture if the coalition needs UDMR’s parliamentary votes.
Hunor recalled the party’s earlier attempt to support a minority government under Siegfried Mureșan, which did not secure enough votes, and cautioned against jumping to a new coalition within a short period. He also indicated that a government built around PSD would still require PNL’s backing, implying UDMR could help reach the needed vote count. The final decision, he said, hinges on the identity of the prime-ministerial candidate named by Nicușor Dan.
Why it matters
UDMR's stance will influence whether the new Romanian cabinet can secure a parliamentary majority.
