Ukraine adopts amendment expanding minority-language schooling rights
The Verkhovna Rada approved an amendment to the education law that allows schools where at least 51 % of pupils are from a national minority to obtain official minority status and conduct instruction, documentation and breaks in the minority language. The amendment also permits curricula to include the history and culture of the minority, exempts private school directors of minority‑language classes from Ukrainian language competency certification, and allows students to request translated national exam materials.
Hungarian foreign minister Anita Orbán and other Hungarian officials welcomed the change, saying it meets Kyiv’s promises and will be monitored through the mixed intergovernmental economic commission. Carpathian Hungarian advocacy groups issued a joint declaration urging immediate and flawless enforcement of the new provisions.
