Umno Calls for Early GE16, Citing Start of Election Period

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party wants the 16th General Election moved forward because the government has entered the election period after three years in office.

During the media briefing for the 2026 Umno General Assembly, secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki asserted that Malaysia’s current government has entered the "election period," a phase that starts after three years of administration and permits an election before the parliamentary term expires. He stressed that significant policies, such as the Johor state’s ten-year "Johor Maju Johor" vision, require explicit voter approval rather than being implemented at the party’s discretion.

Delegates at the assembly and various party wings reportedly share this view. Party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also serves as deputy prime minister, said an early GE16 would enable Umno to obtain a fresh mandate and re-establish its role as the nation’s leading party rather than merely a supporting coalition partner.

Why it matters

An early election could reshape Malaysia’s political landscape and affect the ruling coalition’s stability.
