ABVP Dominates Delhi University Student Union Election as Critics Warn Fragmented Opposition

In the latest Delhi University Students' Union elections, the RSS-linked ABVP achieved a landslide victory, with Yash Dabas receiving 24,576 votes to become president and independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, who ran after being rejected by NSUI, winning the vice-president post with 30,615 votes. NSUI’s candidate Vijai Shankar Meena lost by a margin of 2,053 votes, underscoring a sharp decline for the Congress-aligned student wing that had previously held sway.

CJP co-convenor Saurav Das responded on X, emphasizing that the majority of the student body did not support the winners and that a fractured opposition ultimately strengthens the incumbent regime. He urged the Congress and its bureaucratic factions to focus on internal organization rather than targeting the CJP, and warned that sections of the left are overly concerned with ideological purity. Das also highlighted a rebel NSUI candidate’s large margin win for vice-president as evidence of internal dissent. The election outcome is being framed as a reflection of broader political currents among India’s youth, who face unemployment, a strained education system, and economic pressures.
