Dadang Hartanto Named New Chief of Jakarta Metropolitan Police

Dadang Hartanto has taken over as Jakarta Metropolitan Police chief, a move framed by officials as part of routine personnel rotation.

In a personnel reshuffle announced on October 3, 2026, Insp. Gen. Dadang Hartanto assumed command of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police. The move, described by National Police Public Relations chief Insp. Gen. Johnny Eddizon Isir as a means to maintain task continuity and foster officer development, places Hartanto—who turns 55 on November 24—at the helm of the capital’s police force. Hartanto’s résumé includes leadership of the Maluku regional police, stints as Medan and North Sumatra deputy chief, and a tenure as personal secretary to the National Police chief.

While leading Medan police, he created a specialised reporting post to expose illegal drug-suspect releases, prompting the dismissal of four officers. In September 2026, he ordered an inquiry into officers linked to a drug-abuse case in Ambon. His promotion to one outlet is backed by Presidential Decree No. 38/POLRI/2026 and paves the way for a three-star rank. A 2025 wealth report shows Hartonto’s assets total roughly Rp8 billion, mainly real estate across South Jakarta, Cimahi, Surabaya and Cianjur, plus a Toyota Fortuner and cash holdings.

Why it matters

The new chief will shape policing in Indonesia's capital and influence national law-enforcement priorities.
