Luca Niculescu named premier candidate by Nicușor Dan, outlines first priorities
Former journalist and diplomat Luca Niculescu was appointed by Nicușor Dan as Romania's premier-designate and delivered his initial policy pledges.
Five months into a political crisis, Nicușor Dan made his fourth nomination for prime minister, selecting Luca Niculescu, a former journalist with diplomatic experience. Niculescu has served as ambassador to Paris and as state secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and since 2022 has overseen Romania's OECD accession process. In his inaugural remarks he pledged seriousness in handling public funds, predictability for the economy, and accelerated investment and reforms, while acknowledging the difficulty of the moment.
He outlined plans to build a parliamentary majority that will back a government firmly aligned with European and Atlantic goals. Over the coming days he intends to present a concrete programme, priorities and his cabinet team to the public.
Why it matters
The appointment could shape Romania's next government and its path toward EU and OECD integration.
