Opposition MPs reject call to summon Orbán Viktor in pardon scandal hearing

Novák Előd, Zsigó Róbert and Máthé Zsuzsa voted against inviting former Prime Minister Orbán Viktor to testify before the pardon-scandal inquiry.

In a recent session of the Kegyelmi Botrány Felelőseit Feltáró Vizsgálóbizottság, opposition members Novák Előd, Zsigó Róbert and Máthé Zsuzsa voted against a motion to summon former Prime Minister Orbán Viktor for questioning about the pardon controversy. Because all three opposition representatives opposed the motion, the six-person committee will not schedule an interview with Orbán. Novák Előd explained that, while Orbán bears responsibility for many issues, his testimony is not warranted in this case unless someone can prove that the pardon of K. Endré was issued on his instruction.

He clarified that he would back a hearing if any allegation arose that justified Orbán's presence. The committee, chaired by Schummer Orsolya, had previously planned to hear former President Novák Katalin, ex-Justice Minister Varga Judit and former Prosecutor General Balog Zoltán, who said he would appear if summoned.

Why it matters

The vote postpones a potential probe of a former prime minister's role in a controversial pardon.
