Severe rain keeps Balearic islands under emergency as floods disrupt transport and services

Heavy rain continues to batter Eivissa and Formentera, prompting red-level emergency alerts and causing road closures, airport disruptions and widespread flooding.

Rainfall across the Pitiüsses has kept the civil protection alert at its highest level, despite the national weather agency reducing its advisory to orange. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the Sa Llavanera and Cas Capità torrents, which are still being monitored for rising water levels. On Eivissa, the main highway to the airport was partially shut down overnight, prompting the pre-emptive deployment of water-pump trucks to clear water and mud, particularly around the hipódromo.

The airport has resumed operations, but travelers are advised to verify flight status and access routes. Formentera has suffered extensive flooding, with many shops and public areas underwater and the island’s hospital reporting partial inundation of its operating rooms. Emergency services logged 91 incidents across the islands—53 in Formentera and 38 in Eivissa—mostly involving flooded premises, fallen trees and road obstructions. The Unidad Militar de Emergencias is active on the islands, and all schools, as well as most public offices, remain closed pending safety assessments.
