Three tremors rattled eastern Almería overnight, strongest quake felt in over 20 towns

Three earthquakes struck Almería’s Levante between Sunday night and early Monday, the largest a magnitude 3.4 at 5:31 am, shaking more than 20 municipalities without reported damage.

Between Sunday night and early Monday, Spain’s national seismology agency logged three earthquakes in the Levante region of eastern Almería. A magnitude-2.8 event hit Bédar at 11:09 pm, followed by a 1.9 tremor at 4:25 am in the same locality. The third quake, a shallow magnitude-3.4 shock located northwest of Los Gallardos, struck at 5:31 am and was felt most intensely in Arboleas, Lubrín and nearby hamlets, attaining intensity level IV on the European Macroseismic Scale.

Residents across more than 20 municipalities, from the coast to the Almanzora valley, reported vibrations, yet no injuries or property damage have been confirmed. One outlet assigned intensity III-IV to several surrounding towns and opened a macroseismic questionnaire for citizens to detail their experiences. This activity follows a recent pattern of minor seismic events in the area, which lies near the African-Eurasian plate boundary.

Why it matters

Understanding the recent quakes helps residents and authorities assess seismic risk in a tectonically active region.
