South Korea aims to defend men's relay gold as women's football faces North Korea at Asian Games
South Korean swimmers will try to retain their men's 4x200m freestyle relay title while the women's football team meets North Korea in the first all-Korean match of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
South Korea’s four-man swimming squad—Hwang Sun-woo, Kim Woo-min, Lee Ho-joon and newcomer Kim Young-beom—will defend the men’s 4×200-metre freestyle relay at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, a title first captured at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. Kim Young-beom, a 20-year-old who earned silver in the 100 m freestyle the day before, joins the team after breaking Hwang’s national record last year. In the women’s football tournament, the Korean side, already assured of a quarter-final berth, will face North Korea in Group F, marking the Games’ inaugural inter-Korean clash and determining the group winner.
South Korean athletes are also competing in baseball, volleyball, shooting and wushu, with hopes of adding to the nation’s medal tally. The Games, hosted in Aichi-Nagoya, continue to showcase multiple Korean teams across sports.
